ARESTIN® Antibiotic Therapy to Treat Gum Disease
Confront your periodontal (gum) disease with an antibiotic
If you have gum disease, a deep cleaning is needed to help improve the health of your teeth and gums. After a deep cleaning, it is inevitable that some bacteria are left behind. That’s why at our office we recommend ARESTIN®. It is a low-dose antibiotic placed directly into the infected gum tissue that helps kill bacteria which are the root of the problem. Our team will help assess and customize the best treatment option for you.
FDA approved
ARESTIN® contains tiny microspheres of minocycline hydrochloride (1 mg); this prescription antibiotic is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These microspheres release the antibiotic over time, killing bacteria so your gums can heal optimally.
ARESTIN® treatment is painless and easy
Your dental hygienist recommends ARESTIN in the infected pockets below your gum line. This may happen at the time of the deep cleaning or during routine cleaning visits. Your dental hygienist will gently place these microspheres into infected areas. ARESTIN will dissolve on its own, so no removal is required.
ARESTIN® is different from antibiotic pills
ARESTIN is different from a systemic antibiotic that you take as a pill where the antibiotic travels throughout your entire body. ARESTIN is placed right where you need it, delivering the localized antibiotic directly to your gums with no systemic effect.
What to expect as your gums heal
After treatment with ARESTIN®, there are a few things you need to know. Avoid chewing hard, crunchy, or sticky foods such as carrots, taffy, and gum for 7 days. You should also avoid using floss or a dental pick in the treated areas for 10 days. With proper dental hygiene, it’s possible to fight bacteria and avoid future problems with your gums.
Options are available to help pay for ARESTIN®
Your existing medical coverage may cover your ARESTIN® prescription. In many cases, we can help you find out how to get your ARESTIN prescription for a co-pay as low as $0. Call our office to get more information about your dental and medical coverage.
